Located in south Donegal in the famous fishing port of Killybegs, Island Seafoods is a family-run business with over 35 years of experience. The Island Seafoods story started back in 1986 with local man Mick O’Donnell at the helm. Bringing premium catch to customers around the world, Island Seafoods’ ethos was always about giving great value to customers and doing more with less. The business became hugely popular and to this day, continues to ship to markets such as UAE, China, Africa, mainland Europe and Japan

 

Tens years later, in 1996, Island Seafoods undertook an expansion of the production facility to accommodate the demand for its seafood products. A native of Killybegs, Mick was always ahead of his time when it came to sustainable processes.

 

In 2007, Island Seafoods lead the way to a renewable future by addressing ‘green issues’ and implemented a series of green initiatives like recycling, energy conservation and green teams. It was in 2007 when the Donegal seafood company developed its hydroelectric power plant which fed off a stream along the factory.

 

In 2010, Mick’s son Michael joined the team and his passion for innovation and entrepreneurship led to the investment of a new smokehouse to develop the Atlantic Treasures range. Michael wanted to bring seafood into the 21st century and saw a gap in the market. The now multi-award-winning range can be found in supermarkets nationwide as well as in Japan, UAE and China. The range now comes in five different flavours Smoked Mackerel with a Ginger, Chilli and Lime Glaze, Smoked Mackerel with Honey and Mustard Glaze, Hot Smoked Salmon with Sundried Tomato & Chilli and Hot Smoked Herring with Orange & Rosemary.

Island Seafood and its sister company Atlantic Treasures was one of the first members of Bord Bia’s Green Initaitve when it launch in 2012. The Donegal seafood business went on to win Green Business of The Year and The Green Seafood Business Award in 2015.

2017 brought a fresh new look for Atlantic Treasures with the addition of new exciting smoked mackerel flavours Mixed Peppercorn, Maplewood Smoked. The range grew popular with seafood lovers.

Our fresh new look in 2017 brought the launch of our handcrafted Nordic Style Marinated Herring in 2018. With four exciting flavours Sweet Mustard and Tarragon, Fresh Dill and Onion, Fine Balsamic and Stair Anise, Cumin and Lemon.

 
 

With a drive for new business ideas, Michael went on to establish The Fish Stop in Killybegs. The fishmongers set in the heart of Killybegs offer a local and nationwide fresh seafood service stocking a great range of fresh, chilled and frozen seafood. It also has an artisan food stand, with local produce from local and Irish suppliers.

 

In one of the most exciting chapters of Island Seafoods and Atlantic Treasures, the businesses were the first ever Irish seafood company to achieve 100% carbon-neutral production with the installation of the 850Kw Wind Turbine.

 

Once again, looking for new opportunities, Michael developed the Atlantic Treasures range with the upcoming launch of the new Atlantic Treasures Frozen Range and Whiskey-infused Smoked Salmon. The adaption will include Frozen Mackerel Fillets and Frozen Salmon Darnes in easy-cook bags and a Taste of Donegal with our Silkie Whiskey infused Smoked Salmon.
