It all started when…

Sustainability has always been a top priority at Atlantic Treasures through our supply chain, and the efficiency of our production. We are eager to play our part in reducing our carbon footprint. Our parent company, Island Seafoods was one of the first pelagic processors to be Origin Green certified.

In 2007, we built a hydroelectric power plant that feeds off a stream flowing alongside our plant. This generates over 850,000 kWh per year of electricity. In 2021, we have installed an 850kW wind turbine which will generate about 820,000 kWh per year. Our family-run business based in Killybegs, is now generating its own green electricity powering our entire production facility, after becoming one of the first Irish food businesses to install our own wind turbine.

Our combined renewable electricity generated onsite from the local wind and water, generates more than one and a half times the electricity we need to run all our electric processes onsite. The onsite generated electricity is carbon neutral, ensuring that the entire mackerel intake and smoking process is a carbon neutral operation.

By producing our own green electricity, it is saving 361 tonnes of CO2e in imported electricity per year. This is the equivalent of the carbon emissions of one car driving 2,107,016 km (from Killybegs to Sydney, 8,000 km and back again, 58 times) or driving around the world 52 times.

As part of our carbon neutrality journey, we developed a Green Team who meet regularly to identify, develop, implement and monitor environmentally driven initiatives.
